Mongolia Risk Assessment Guide

Expat Life in Mongolia

Mongolia has a population of approximately 2.9 million people. It saw 476,000 tourists in 2012, an increase of 16,000 from 2010. Popular destinations and events include Ulaanbaatar, the Nadaam Festival, and Khuiten Uul. Mongolia’s main export is coal, but the economy struggles to develop due to fiscal irresponsibility and weak rule of law.

Located between Russia and China in northern Asia, Mongolia is a vast country with wintery deserts, grassy steppes, and mountains in the west and southwest. Mongolia is most famous for the 13th century military leader, Genghis Khan. Today’s borders reflect a small portion of what Genghis Khan had once conquered. Since 1990, Mongolia has been transitioning into a parliamentary democracy.

Currently, there are no specific security threats in Mongolia, but travelers are always advised to be aware of worldwide terrorism risks.

Outside of Ulaanbaatar, healthcare facilities are inadequate. Even within the capital, only basic healthcare is available. At times, doctors and hospitals may ask for cash payments for treatment in advance. Specialized care for the elderly and infants is not available.

On June 15, 2016, the CDC issued a watch level 1 for Mongolia due to an ongoing measles outbreak. The CDC recommends that each traveler is up-to-date on their vaccinations, and be sure to wash their hands frequently and thoroughly.

In some cases, you may have to travel in order to access appropriate health care. A Medical Evacuation and Repatriation insurance policy from Clements covers expenses to transport you to a capable medical facility in case a local medical center isn’t able to provide adequate treatment.

Many restaurants do not have high levels of sanitation, especially those outside of Ulaanbaatar. Stomach illnesses are common to travelers. Only drink bottled or boiled water and avoid ice in your drinks.

Clements Worldwide's Expatriate Health Insurance allows you to receive affordable treatment outside your home country. Prescription drugs, maternity care, mental health treatment and other services are included. Policies provide USD 5 million in health care benefits, and you can choose from any number of available doctors. Optional War and Terrorism extensions are available, so any injury suffered from an act of war and terror is covered.

While there have been occasional instances of civil and political unrest in Mongolia, most crime is non-violent. In 2008, protests erupted in Ulaanbaatar surrounding the public’s perceived corruption of the local elections. Bricks were thrown at fire engines, five people were killed, and buildings were set on fire.

Petty crime is common. Mongolia, however, is seeing an increase in violent crimes with reports of foreigners being robbed and assaulted, especially at night. The likelihood of crimes increase during festive months: New Year, Tsagaan Sar (December – February) and Naadam (July).

The infrastructure of Mongolia has not kept up with its population growth. Roads, especially outside of the capital, are irregularly maintained. Other vehicles on the road are in poor conditions, as are many rental cars. Exercise caution while driving. Buses are the main mode of transport in Mongolia, and the Trans-Mongolian Railway runs daily trains from Ulaanbaatar to Darkhan, Sukhbaatar, and Erdenet, as well as Zamyn-Üüd, Choir and Sainshand.

Clements offers Overseas Car Insurance, which includes Physical Damage, Third Party Liability, and Excess Liability coverage. With flexible deductible options and fast claims processing, your policy will provide coverage for your vehicle fleet whether it’s on the road, parked or transported abroad.
