Kuwait Risk Assessment Country Guide

Expat Life in Kuwait

Due in part to its large oil reserves, Kuwait has quickly become one of the wealthiest countries in the world. With a population only slightly above three million, the nation is one of the smallest in the Middle East.

Thousands of expatriates live in Kuwait, and many more foreigners visit each year. While most experiences are trouble-free, there is a general threat of terrorism for the region.

The political situation in Kuwait is fairly stable, although there have been a number of demonstrations and protests recently. You should take care when traveling through Kuwait, especially in more conservative regions. Comprehensive international insurance is recommended upon leaving your home country.

On November 19, 2015, the CDC issued a level 2 alert for those traveling to the Arabian Peninsula due to an outbreak of MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome). MERS is a viral respiratory illness that causes fever, cough, and shortness of breath. The CDC encourages travelers to wash their hands consistently and avoid contact with other sick people in the area.

Before departing for Kuwait, you should discuss any possible vaccinations and other preventative measures recommended for Kuwait with your primary care physician. While the country's medical services are in good condition, and local clinics and private hospitals often provide adequate levels of care, healthcare fees are controlled by the state and can tend to be expensive. Appropriate insurance can help manage these costs while abroad.

While the political situation in Kuwait is relatively secure, demonstrations, protests and large gatherings do occur. However, these are mostly peaceful, although recent clashes in 2012 resulted in violence between police and protestors, including reports of tear gas being used. You should remain aware while in public and avoid such demonstrations.

With flexible deductible options and fast claims processing, your policy will provide coverage for your vehicle fleet whether it’s on the road, parked or transported abroad.

Kuwait is situated along the Persian Gulf. This location means that the  region can be volatile, especially near maritime boundaries and the islands of Bubiyan and Warbah in the northern Gulf and Abu Musa and the Tunbs to the south. Vessels traveling in the north between Iraq, Iran and Kuwait are often detained and inspected.

Regional tensions can also disrupt maritime travel.A Maritime Security insurance policy from Clements ensures compliance with BIMCO insurance requirements and GUARDCON standards that will achieve cost savings, better coverage and more efficient policy administration.

On June 26, 2015, a suicide bomber attacked a Shia mosque, killing 27 people and injuring 227 others. ISIL claimed responsibility for the attack. This was the first bombing in Kuwait since 1985. As terrorism continues to rise due to the influence of ISIL, travelers should take extreme caution when traveling to Kuwait and surrounding areas.

Recent terror threats have been made about the Gulf region as a whole. Possible targets include residential compounds, military, oil and transport interests. In 2009, local security forces arrested six Kuwaiti nationals associated with a terrorist cell planning a major attack on a US military base in the country.
