Cambodia Risk Assessment Country Guide

Working Abroad in Cambodia

Impacted by years of war and the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia has since emerged as an economic leader, with strong growth in the agriculture, construction and tourism sectors. The nation is often a desirable travel destination, with beautiful, expansive countrysider  and bustling urban centers.

However, recent political tensions and other risks demonstrate the need for adequate international insurance cover while staying in Cambodia. According to the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO), travel to to the Preah Vihear temple area and to the Ta Krabey/Ta Moan temple area near the Thai-Cambodia border is not recommended because of potential violent political activity as result of the disputed general election of July 2013. The security situation has deteriorated in Phnom Penh, the nation's capital.

Before leaving for Cambodia, you should discuss all vaccinations and other recommended preventative measures with your primary care physician. The public health facilities in the country are poor and emergency services standards are below those typically found in the US and the UK. Additionally,  obtaining the correct medication can prove challenging, and counterfeit products are common. You should bring an ample supply from your home country, if possible.

Cases of Avian Flu in poultry have been reported in Cambodia, witha  number of humans infected  with fatalities as recently as 2011. There have also been reported cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, resulting in multiple deaths among children.

Incidents of political violence and instability have declined in recent years. However, the recent general election in July 2013 has led to increased tensions within the country.

Small-scale protests occur often in Phnom Penh, leading to roadblocks. Demonstrations may coincide with significant holidays, such as International Human Rights Day. In September 2013, a mass protest in the capital city resulted in clashes between police and protestors, with one casualty and several injuries.

Small explosive devices have been found in Phnom Penh as recently as September 2013, outside of the National Assembly building.

A Personal Accident insurance policy from Clements will protect you or your organization’s employees and their families' financial stability following an accident, regardless of whether it occurs on the job or during personal time.

Driving in Cambodia can be dangerous. Road conditions are very poor and the country has an extremely high accident rate, with a number of fatalities and serious injuries. All motorcycle drivers are required to wear a helmet, and local police have sometimes banned rental shops from servicing tourists and foreigners. Because of these practices, foreigners found riding motorocycles may be subject to being stopped by the police and a monetary fine.

Clements offers international car insurance, which includes Physical Damage, Third Party Liability, and Excess Liability coverage. With flexible deductible options and fast claims processing, your policy will provide coverage for your vehicle fleet whether it’s on the road, parked or transported abroad.

An optional Political Violence extension is also recommended, which broadens the coverage to include strikes, riots, malicious damage, sabotage, war, terrorism or civil unrest.
