Ebola - Out of the News, but Not Over

If you work in Western Africa, you know that the outbreak from Ebola is far from over.  While health infrastructure has been crucial in helping to curtail the spread of the epidemic, there are still typically 100 to 150 new cases reported each week and many more families in quarantine who need support from aid organizations.  Also, the effect on overall health care in that region has been crippling.  Efforts on controlling malaria and pre-natal/newborn health have had to take a lower priority resulting in need for increased support.

From a risk management perspective, Smita Bhargava, Vice President of Programs & Special Risks for Clements Worldwide, counsels clients to monitor their renewals.  "The key priority for all companies is protecting their employees," Bhargava says.  "As clients operating in these countries renew their policies, we work to ensure their evacuation coverage, disability policies, and life insurance still supports employees but also advise on how to deal with independent contractors, consultants, and volunteers."

Do you Know the Risks in Mexico? - ask Clements Worldwide!

Mexico is the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world and due to its proximity with the United States, a popular destination for expatriates.  Tales of drug violence and bad infrastructure (such as drinking water) make people afraid to go beyond tourism and explore expatriate living.  Using Clements Worldwide's Risk Assessment, you can evaluate whether Mexico is a good destination for you, and learn the insurance products that might help you feel more safe and secure if you decide to live in that country.

Some key items:

  • Overall, most of Mexico is relatively safe for travel, according to the UK Government
  • Mexico is currently undergoing an economic revival thanks to a substantial rise in foreign investment, offering possible job opportunities
  • According to the statistics published by the Mexican Secretaria de Gobernacion (SEGOB), kidnappings rose 20% in 2013 over the previous year, including a rise in express kidnappings where individuals are taken to ATMs for immediate payouts. So caution is still necessary
