Case Study: NGO Member Life Saved by Clements Kidnapping and Ransom Policy  

While rarely publicized, the kidnapping of NGO employees based or traveling overseas is on the rise. In 2009, a member of an NGO in the Philippines was kidnapped by a local gang at gunpoint and held hostage. Through the Kidnap and Ransom extension from Clements, crisis consultants were quickly sent in with travel expenses covered. The consultants were able to negotiate a lower ransom amount and secure safe release for the victim. Thanks to the NGO’s Kidnap and Ransom insurance policy, the organisation was able to safely return its employee while all related expenses were covered.

Case Study: DBA Provides Lifetime Benefits to US National Employee’s Family   

A bomb exploded in an international development group’s Baghdad outpost, killing a US-national employee. As the sole breadwinner for his family with an annual salary of USD 125,000, plus 30 percent hazard pay, the employee was survived by his spouse and two children. 

Thanks to coverage through Clements’ DBA policy, the family received financial assistance following the NGO employee’s unfortunate passing. DBA coverage provided benefits to the family of the deceased, including: funeral expenses and lost wage death benefits of $1325 weekly, which is the maximum allowed by DBA.

Protecting your Employees

Group Health: Clements’ affordable group health plans allow organisations to provide employees with a variety of benefits, including deductible amount options, minimal out-of-pocket expense for medical costs, and access to a global network of healthcare professionals, with direct billing to 6,000 doctors and hospitals worldwide.  An annual physical with a caregiver back in the U.S. is also included.  Medical evacuation and repatriation is available with every policy.   

Personal Accident: Provides your employees and beneficiaries with financial compensation in the unfortunate event of an accident during an international trip or living and working overseas. It offers 24 hour cover for Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D), Disablement and pays for Medical Expense, Medical Evacuation and Repatriation. Personal Accident benefits are payable in addition to DBA or Workers Compensation benefits.

Group Life Insurance: Clements offers international Group Life Insurance, an essential type of coverage that protects your employees’ beneficiaries against future financial burdens should an untimely loss occur, anywhere in the world. Clients are able to purchase coverage in amounts proportionate to annual salary and add coverage based on individual needs. Coverage is worldwide, including for individuals working in high-risk areas*.

Foreign Voluntary Workers' Compensation & Employer's Liability: Statutory benefits paid to an employee or qualified dependents or medical providers as a result of job-related injury or illness, regardless of employer’s negligence or responsibility for the injury or illness.  Employers Liability is coverage for suits arising out work-related injury or illness, typically involving negligence or allegations of negligence by the employer. 

War & Terrorism and Political Violence: Coverage extension can be added to several types of polices to protect personnel, assets and liabilities from the political violence risks such as civil unrest, war, riots, strikes, and acts of terrorism. 

Defense Base Act Workers Compensation: Required insurance per FAR 52.228-3 for all federally funded public works contracts overseas (OCONUS). Provides contractually required protection for the contractor’s civilian employees for medical expenses, lost wages, disability, and or death, including War Hazard, arising from work related injury or occupational illness. 

Kidnap and Ransom: Ensures financial assistance following a kidnapping, such as ransom demands, deployment of a crisis response team to manage the abduction and legal liabilities that may arise as a result of the kidnapping.

Protecting Your Mission

Directors & Officers: Provides organisations, directors, officers and board members with the proper coverage in the event they are sued for alleged wrongful acts or negligence. It covers legal liabilities for alleged wrongful acts in their capacity as directors and officers and protects the personal finances of those board members that are exposed. Employment Practices liability is available with D&O to protect against suits from wrongful termination, discrimination, and harassment.

Commercial General Liability: Coverage indemnifies the cost of third party bodily injury and property damage as a result of your operations abroad including legal costs. The policy also covers aggregate products/completed operations liability.

Errors and Omissions: Also known as professional liability, it is a form of insurance to financially protect against claims of negligence in the performance of specified professional services.

Political Evacuation & Salary Continuation: Designed to protect international organisations and their staff from unforeseen financial consequences associated with the evacuation of personnel due to political instability or military confrontation.

Vehicle Fleet Insurance: Offers international car insurance, which includes comprehensive, collision, theft, physical damage including political violence, and excess liability coverage. If you have over 100 vehicles in your fleet you need to be taking a more comprehensive approach to this area of risk management.

Crime insurance & Employee Benefits Liability:  Designed to protect an organization from losses due to either employee dishonesty or third party fraud. The types of fraud can range broadly from employee theft; expense report fraud; forgery; funds transfer fraud to identity theft.  Employee benefits liability also covers the liability of an employer for an error or omission in the administration of an employee benefit program.
