Learn about the Total Loss Process. Frequently asked questions

What is a Total Loss?
Clements considers a vehicle a total loss when: Damage to the vehicle is so severe that it cannot be repaired safely, or the estimate of repairs exceeds its value by 80%

What happens if my vehicle is a total loss?
Clements will pay the actual cash value of the vehicle, less any deductible. Clements can only pay your claim if you have the appropriate coverage on your policy. Your claims adjuster will tell you if you do not have the right coverage.

How does Clements determine the value of my vehicle?
We will use the NADA Book (Official Used Car Guide) based on the month and the year of the loss to determine the value of the total loss vehicle. The NADA Book is used on all US specification vehicles.

On a non-US specification vehicle, its value will decrease 1% per month from the date of purchase to the date of the loss. For example a non-US specification vehicle purchased on 7/12/2004 for $12,000 was a total loss on 11/30/06.
You would start by calculating the actual cash value of the vehicle like this:

07/12/04-07/12/05= 12 months
07/12/05-07/12/06= 12 months
07/12/06-11/30/06= 5 months

Total amount of months (29 months)
Take 100-29 months= 71%
Take the purchase price of the vehicle which is $12,000.00 X 71%

The new actual cash value of the vehicle is $8250.00. The vehicle has been depreciated 1% per month for 29 months.

Who does Clements pay when my vehicle is a total loss?
If you own the vehicle, Clements will reimburse you directly.
If the vehicle is financed, and the finance company is listed on your policy, we are obligated to make the check payable to both you and the financial company.
However, if the loan has been paid, we will ask you to provide the security interest filing, known as the lien release, and the settlement check will be made payable to the named insured.

Do I get a replacement vehicle when my vehicle is a total loss?
In the event that your vehicle is a total loss and you have rental reimbursement coverage, your coverage will pay up to $300.00 maximum for your rental vehicle.

What do I need to do when my vehicle is a total loss?
Clements works hard to make claims hassle-free for our customers. Promptly, complete and return all forms and documents requested by our claims adjuster so we can handle your claim promptly.

Stolen Vehicles:

On all stolen vehicles, there is a one month waiting period. Once the period is over, if the vehicle has not been recovered, the same steps for total loss vehicle apply.
